Prostate Cancer

The prostate is a walnut sized gland found only in men and is an important internal part of the male genitourinary system. Located underneath the bladder and in front of the rectum the prostate surrounds the urethra and is partially responsible for the creation of seminal fluid. Prostate cancer occurs when the cells of the prostate develop abnormally, while the cause of the abnormal development is unknown screening tests are available. Like other cancers survival rates are best with early diagnosis and treatment, men who are middle aged or have a family history of prostate cancer should speak with their doctor about their risks and when they should be screened.
